Extractions are needed when teeth that have decayed or have been damaged through trauma are past the point of being saved. Sometimes teeth are removed when crowding is an issue, or to make room for dental implants or dentures. In the cases where there is decay or damage, patients often feel immediate relief once a tooth is extracted. Many suffer from symptoms for months or even years before having dental needs taken care of. Extractions are usually over quickly and heal within a matter of days.
The area around the tooth being removed is numbed with a local anesthetic, to minimize discomfort. The tooth is extracted from the mouth using the gentlest available techniques, making sure that that tooth is completely evacuated. Once the tooth is removed, the body begins the healing process and when healing is complete bone will fill the void in the jaw left by the root.
In most cases, healthy teeth will be saved when possible. Our staff will go over the need for extraction and any other questions you may have.
We will go over the post extraction regimen with you at your appointment. It is likely to include avoiding very hot and very cold food and beverages, keeping the extraction site packed and clean and instructions for pain medications you can take. Written instructions are sent home with each patient to make recovery as simple as possible.
Some bleeding will be normal. You will want to be cautious when eating, drinking, or rinsing for the first few days. The extraction site needs to remain undisturbed for the blood to clot, which encourages bone growth and healing. If you ever have any questions or concerns afterward, feel free to give us a call!
